La Zoo is excited to announce that Masai giraffes Zainabu and Phillip welcomed a healthy male calf on Friday, April 8. At six feet tall and 172 pounds, it’s hard to believe the new addition is still a baby boy — and he’s only going to get bigger. He is the tallest giraffe calf in the history of the Los Angeles Zoo. This birth marks the fourth calf for Zainabu and sixth calf for Phillip.

This type of giraffe (also known as the Maasai or Kilimanjaro giraffe) is native to East Africa and has distinctive jagged, irregular spots that are usually darker than other species. They are also the tallest of this species, making them the tallest land animals on Earth. A full-grown bull can weigh almost 3,000 pounds so this calf could be about the same weight as a small car in a couple of years.
Animal Keeper Mike Bona said this: “Every giraffe birth we have at the L.A. Zoo is exciting. I’ve worked with giraffes here since 2005, and I have to say, Zainabu is a wonderful mother – she knew exactly what she needed to do when her labor started. I am thrilled that we have this new calf to represent his endangered species.”
