Each summer, Bard fanatics watch their favorite works come to life at the historic Old Zoo in Griffith Park.
Independent Shakespeare Co. puts on a series of lively productions each week, inviting audiences to take a seat on the grass (read: bring a picnic blanket) and enjoy performances like this season’s headliner: The Tempest.

THE TEMPEST
August 7 – September 5
Performances are Wednesday – Sunday at 7pm
For 12 years, Prospero and his daughter, Miranda, have been trapped on an island in the middle of dangerous seas. Fate brings a long-awaited ship to their shores. What follows is a story of magic, treachery, and miraculous reconciliation.
Tucked into a dell at the Old Zoo, this production celebrates the power of Shakespeare’s language as well as the beauty of Griffith Park. We look forward to reuniting with you this summer!
Please read on for more details, and specific information you need to enjoy this summer’s performance.
You’ll find a few changes to the 2021 season: Since work is still underway on a permanent performance stage, the Independent Shakespeare Co. is instead setting up slightly farther up the hill at the Old Zoo. That means each performance will only be able to accommodate about 250 people, so reservations will be required. Tickets will become available seven days in advance of each performance, for pods of up to four people.
