All About the Cinnamon, a popular bakery known for its unique hip-hop inspired treats, has finally opened its first permanent location in Sherman Oaks. Moreover, the husband-and-wife team behind this venture brings five years of experience from Los Angeles food markets.
Lindsay and Lawrence McDonald officially opened their doors on September 9 at the corner of Van Nuys and Ventura Boulevards. Previously, the couple operated exclusively through Downtown’s Smorgasburg market and various pop-up events throughout Southern California since 2023.
The Philadelphia natives moved to Los Angeles in 2020 and developed their concept around their shared passion for hip-hop music. Consequently, every menu item pays tribute to legendary rap artists. Furthermore, their 13-year-old son Dominic contributes creative ideas for new cinnamon roll flavors.
Hip-Hop Meets Baked Goods
The bakery’s signature items showcase clever wordplay and musical references. For instance, the “Cube” honors Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube with Oreo frosting and cookie pieces. Additionally, the “Notorious B.A.B.K.A.” puts a chocolate twist on traditional babka bread.
Other popular options include the “Big Poppa” (named after Biggie Smalls), the “LL Cool J” topped with Reese’s components, and the “Slick Rick” featuring cookie butter and Lotus Biscoff cookies. Meanwhile, the “DMX” combines extra cinnamon with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and caramel drizzle.
The Sherman Oaks location features artwork by local artist Phill Bourque. Specifically, the mural displays hip-hop legends including Tupac, Nipsey Hussle, Dr. Dre, and Lil Wayne.
Growing Cinnamon Roll Trend
Sherman Oaks joins several other Los Angeles area communities embracing artisanal cinnamon rolls. Similarly, Badash Bakes in Pasadena and Sweet Red Peach locations have attracted devoted followings. Additionally, vegan specialist Gooey Center Bakery serves plant-based alternatives throughout the region.
Despite opening their permanent Sherman Oaks shop, the McDonald family continues selling at Smorgasburg every Sunday. “This bakery represents our way of sharing our story and passion with the community,” Lawrence McDonald explains.
