Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory Brings Rock ‘n’ Roll History to Life with Million Dollar Quartet

The legendary meeting of four rock ‘n’ roll icons comes alive on stage in Costa Mesa this fall. South Coast Repertory presents “Million Dollar Quartet,” a Tony Award-nominated musical celebrating one of music’s most famous recording sessions.

On December 4, 1956, four future Hall of Fame musicians spontaneously gathered at Sun Records in Memphis. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins created an impromptu jam session that became legendary. This musical captures that historic moment when these pioneers shaped the sound of rock ‘n’ roll.

The production features over 20 classic hits that defined a generation. Audiences will hear beloved songs including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Who Do You Love.” New York Magazine praised the show as “dazzling,” highlighting its authentic recreation of that pivotal night in music history.

Costa Mesa’s South Coast Repertory continues its tradition of bringing world-class theater to Orange County. The venue’s central location makes it accessible for music lovers throughout the region. This production offers local audiences a chance to experience a piece of American music history without traveling to Broadway.

The show appeals to multiple generations, from those who lived through rock ‘n’ roll’s golden age to younger audiences discovering these timeless songs. It’s an opportunity for families to share musical memories while creating new ones.
