The 3-day Southern California Gingerbread Challenge exhibit features iconic Los Angeles buildings, towering skyscrapers, famous movie buildings, and whimsical structures from the brightest minds of architects, engineers, and construction professionals across the region. They are participating in a fierce team competition, raising funds for local nonprofits. Teams are competing for Tallest Structure, Best Decorated, Best Replica Building, Most Creative Original Structure, “Best in Show,” President’s Choice, and People’s Choice awards. The gingerbread, candy, and icing structures will be built on-site over five hours, after weeks of design, blueprints, and test builds.

Structures on display include replicas of LA Union Station, portions of The Grove Shopping Center, and the Getty Villa, as well as those from films like Casita (the family home from Disney’s Encanto), the Courthouse from Back to the Future, the Once-ler’s house from The Lorax, and more.

Visitors can purchase mini gingerbread kits on-site, then construct their own buildings, and test them at the shake table for earthquake readiness.

Public viewing and voting (online and in person) opens at 10 am on December 9 and closes at 5 pm on December 11. Visitors making the $5 suggested donation receive five votes to place at any of the structures. Each structure features the nonprofit it supports. So, visitors can vote for the design they like best or assign their votes to a participating non-profit they wish to support. The structure that gets the most votes will be the People’s Choice award winner.

The SoCal Gingerbread Challenge is presented by the the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California, which serves to advance the practice of structural engineering in service to the community.
